Lecture: Management of the environmental noise impact of major ports located in seafront agglomerations: experiences and proposals based on the port of Piraeus case study

Author(s): Chonianaki Fotini, Kountouras Merkourios

Summary:
The operation of major ports located in seafront agglomerations burden their environment. Noise is an important factor of community annoyance related to several activities in the port (industrial type noise sources) and the generated traffic. There is a distinct influence of passenger and commercial port activities/areas and potential mitigation measures vary significantly. \n\nNevertheless, despite mandatory legislative provisions regarding noise assessment methods and management procedures, practical implementation problems demand more advanced acoustic competences and create the requirement for a new environmental impact assessment approach integrated to different disciplines and urban plans.\n\nThe port of Piraeus, which has been selected as a case study, is a major port where huge passenger and cargo transportation flows are served on a daily and annual basis. Land uses and urban context vary around the port. As the formal mitigation measures (reduction of noise emissions and propagation) could not address efficiently the annoyance issues, this paper focuses on the initial detection of critical aspects associated with the acceptability of the port infrastructure in terms of subjective perception, considering in particular urban planning and other actions.
