Summary:
Two projects have been conducted with the purpose of investigating the consequences for noise along roads in the Nordic countries by the introduction of the EU tyre labelling system. In order to sell tyres on the European marked the tyre-road noise has to be tested on an ISO surface and fulfil certain noise limits. The tyres are labelled with the noise level as well as with information on friction and rolling resistance. The typical Nordic road surfaces are the SMA types which are courser than the ISO test surface. 31 passenger tyres have been tested on typical Nordic road surfaces using the CPX trailer method and also 30 truck tyres have been tested on 4 road surfaces using the coast by method. ISO surfaces have also been used for the testing. The analysis of the noise levels of the tyres illustrates big differences between labelled noise levels, and measured noise levels. The measured levels are on average higher than the labelled levels. The analysis also shows that the tyres regarding to noise behaves differently on the Nordic SMA surfaces than on the ISO surfaces.\nTwo scenarios for assessment of annoyance have been examined. One reflecting the emission from a vehicle fleet corresponding to the average noise level of all the tested tyres and another where only the 25-33% most silent tyres are in use. National noise mappings in Denmark and Norway have been used as a background to predict the effect of noise annoyance on a national level of introducing less noisy tyres.\n
