Lecture: Propagation elastic waves through inhomogeneous media

Summary:
The paper deals with the issue of the propagation of one-dimensional elastic waves through inhomogeneous isotropic medium that is a functionally graded material. The corresponding model equation is solved analytically and this solution can be considered to be new in the sense that it extends the existing set of already known exact solutions which describe elastic waves in functionally graded materials. The exact solutions are represented by the Heun functions. To demonstrate applicability of the presented solutions we have calculated the transmission coefficients for phononic crystal whose cells are given by the functionally graded material under consideration.
