Lecture: The acoustic correction of monumental churches: the case of the Duomo of Ravello (Italy)

Author(s): Lombardi Ilaria, Trematerra Amelia

Summary:
Some churches are used for concerts of symphonic music, classical music, or for choirs. Often the spectators appreciate the beauty of the churches, but they don’t appreciate the quality of musical execution, because the acoustics of the room is not so good. The performance of symphonic music or classical music require reverberation time no more than 2.0 seconds. The monumental churches for their large volumes, and the presence of reflecting materials (plaster, marble) have a reverberation time more than 3.0 seconds. In this item, as case study, is considered the Duomo of Ravello. Acoustic measurements were carried out In this church. The measured reverberation time (T30) is more than 3 seconds at the frequency of 1.0 kHz. Afterwards the acoustic simulation for the acoustic correction are reported. The theoretical study has been carried out using the software for architectural acoustics "Odeon".
