Summary:
Many systems are known for archaeological sites topographical mapping, but they are often quite expensive, as in the case of laser-based systems, or inaccurate and unusable in closed environments, such as the GPS-based ones. An innovative three-dimensional measurement system, based on acoustic waves, has been developed and is presented in this paper. The system, described in details in this work, has very low costs: an ordinary personal computer running a custom made software, a multi-channel sound card, 4 small amplified loudspeakers and a little microphone are required. The new system has been tested on selected archaeological sites, with excellent results.
