Summary:
In this lecture we present the results of a large number of acoustical measurements and evaluations on reverberation time, direct STI-PA and community noise, in teaching rooms and sport halls, in all types of school, public and private, including nursery schools. They cover the last 8 years and allow a wide analysis of the school buildings of South Tyrol in Italy.\nThe 2009 revision of the School Building Guideline in South Tyrol gives indications for new buildings and refurbishment works. In this guideline the local government decided to apply the German standard DIN 18041 for the acoustic design of schools. From then on the performance standards for schools for South Tyrol became highly different from the other Italian regions.\nIn Italy since 1977 disabled pupils were integrated in mainstream schools. The acoustical performance standards in schools were defined for pupils with hearing impairment according to the German DIN 18041. In the year 2013 a working group composed by technical experts from educational authorities, local authorities, health protection, associations of the parents of disabled pupils and pupils with hearing impairment and special educational needs defined the rules to guarantee school access for all pupils following the Equality Act. \n
