Lecture: Influence of fillers and sealants on the façade sound insulation

Author(s): Larsson Krister, Öberg Fredrik

Summary:
The Swedish road traffic noise regulations were revised in 2015, with an additional update in 2017, to allow for higher traffic noise levels at the façades of new built residential houses in noise exposed areas. At the same time requirements on indoor levels were unchanged resulting in higher demands on the sound insulation of the façades when built in noise exposed areas. The resulting in-situ sound insulation of a façade is determined not only by the façade wall construction itself, but depend strongly on the performance of the components such as windows and fresh air inlets, as well as the mounting conditions, quality of the mounting performance and the joints and sealants. The higher the sound insulation requirements are, the more critical the details become in order to not deteriorate the in-situ façade insulation. The acoustic performance of joints with fillers or seals may be determined in the laboratory according to EN-ISO 10140-1:2016 Annex J. The measurement result is expressed as the sound reduction index, Rs, per meter of a sealed gap or joint, in decibels as a function of frequency, and single number ratings can be evaluated according to EN-ISO 717-1:2013. In this paper laboratory measurement of sound insulation of sealants are shown and discussed. The influence of the joint sound insulation of windows on the façade sound insulation is shown and criteria for the joint sound insulation in relation to traffic noise levels as well as window acoustic performance are suggested.
