Lecture: Towards a common framework for the development and the ground-truth calibration of mapping of marine traffic underwater noise

Due to the long-range propagation of acoustics waves in seawater, the high source levels of individual ships, and the increase of marine traffic, shipping noise has been identified by the UE MSFD as one of the most pervasive pollution sources in the oceans. The evaluation of environmental status as far as shipping noise is concerned and the proposal of regulations to mitigate the impacts of shipping noise require in-situ measurements and detailed mapping through numerical simulations. \nThe mapping of marine traffic noise via simulation is a complex task relying on a large number of environmental inputs, ship descriptions, simplifying assumptions, and model settings. An increasing number of solutions to map the shipping noise are proposed by the scientific community with a large scope of technical characteristics: on one side solutions with approximated propagation laws, fast and robust to gaps in environmental knowledge, on the other side are refined simulation schemes, computationally expansive and sensitive to environmental inputs. \nA common framework for shipping noise simulation and mapping, to date inexistent, is required to produce simulations at the appropriate maturity for decision making about regulation addressing the mitigation of shipping noise. For the objective, we propose here three contributions:\n- Identity Card of the simulation process to allow transparency, repeatability, and reproductivity. The ID card will gather several forms of environmental data, the shipping and its source levels, the simulation schemes, and their settings used to produce maps of shipping noise,\n- A method to assess the overall accuracy of the simulation scheme,\n- A framework to compare theoretical output with in-situ data. \nOur contributions will be illustrated through the case study of the QUIETMED project, presenting the results from the pilot site of Malta. \n
